Puget Sound Sage

WHO WE ARE:

Puget Sound Sage works to promote good jobs, quality employment opportunities,  a cleaner environment and affordable housing for low/moderate income families  in a the Seattle metropolitan area.  Our mission is to ensure that all families benefit from economic growth, and that local and regional policy decisions meet the social and environmental needs of our communities.

To achieve this future, the institutions that represent regular people - unions, faith congregations and community organizations - must work in partnership with government and business to plan responsibly for the future.

Sage will help bring about this future by building stronger institutions for working families, creating policy that balances the drive for economic growth with economic and environmental justice, and engaging directly in the day-to-day decisions of government that affect our communities.

CURRENT PRIORITIES AND PROJECTS:

  •  In collaboration with University of Washington and community members, Sage is currently engaged in a diesel exhaust exposure study in the neighborhoods of Georgetown and South Park. These neighborhoods border the Port of Seattle and are exposed to diesel exhaust in many forms. With this study, Sage and community members hope to become stakeholders in future decisions around diesel exhaust sources and our health.
  • Earlier this year, Sage and community partners published a report about transit-oriented development (TOD) in the Rainer Valley, addressing issues of gentrification and displacement of people of color, and environmental issues that arise when communities of color and low income families are excluded from TOD. It found that the negative effects of excluding low income households from TOD include a reduction in transit use in Rainier Valley, increased auto-use by displaced residents, and missed opportunities to house the regions’ growing populations of people of color and immigrants in higher density areas.
  •  Working with other community organizations and Port truck drivers, Sage is also engaged in the Coalition for Clean & Safe Ports, a nationwide coalition of over 150 organizations. This coalition focuses on attaining better jobs at the Port and making sure the Port is implementing the highest environmental standards possible.
