Citizens for a Clean Columbia's mission statement is: To advocate for a clean Columbia River ecosystem.

WHO WE ARE:

Citizens for a Clean Columbia (CCC) is a grassroots, volunteer organization focused on issues of the Upper Columbia River and Lake Roosevelt. Formed originally in the early 1990’s to address aquatic milfoil, members quickly realized that an organized effort was needed to bring attention to contamination from Canadian industry. CCC was instrumental in pushing for significant reductions of contamination from both Teck Cominco’s lead/zinc smelter and from Celgar’s pulp mill.

CCC continues to work to preserve the beauty and safety of our river. We collaborate with other groups to hold polluters accountable for damages to the health of the river, to bring attention to health problems of people and wildlife, and to address continued toxic discharges of chemicals and heavy metals into the Columbia River and its tributaries.

 GOALS:

  • Reviewing sampling plans as part of the Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study (RIFS) and sharing our concerns and making suggestions for improvement to the EPA.
  • Pursuing additional funds for a technical advisor to help with the above task and to assist in interpreting study results as they become available.
  • Supporting the Colville Confederate Tribes in their work to hold Teck accountable for past pollution and in conducting a resource use survey.
  • Collaborating with other activist groups that work to protect and preserve the once mighty Columbia
  • Hosting meetings, conducting public outreach, and encouraging informed decision-making.
